TORONTO, 27 May 2005 — Kyle Davies tossed 5 1/3 solid inning and combined with three relievers for an eight-hit shutout as the Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets 3-0 in National League play at Turner Field on Wednesday.

Making just his second major league start, Davies (2-0) scattered five hits, struck out six and walked one, giving Atlanta a sweep of the three-game series as well as a fourth win in five.

John Foster, Adam Bernero and Chris Reitsma combined to work the final 3 2/3 innings as the Braves shutout the Mets for the second consecutive game.

Davies, who tossed five shutout innings in his major league debut against Boston, has sparkled since being called up from the minors.

He has not allowed a run and just nine hits in 10 1/3 innings of work.

Victor Zambrano (2-5) took the loss, allowing three runs - one earned - on four hits over six innings.

The Mets starter also made a costly error when he fielded a bunt and threw the ball wide, allowing two runs to score in a three-run fifth inning.

Atlanta’s Marcus Giles went three-for-four at the plate and had a career high three steals.

In Milwaukee, Bill Hall and Carlos Lee both homered and Gary Glover tossed six strong innings as the Brewers pounded the Colorado Rockies 11-1 to complete a three-game series sweep.

The Brewers provided Glover with an early cushion as they jumped out to a 5-0 first inning lead then scored three more times both the fourth and sixth innings.

Glover (3-3) allowed just one run - unearned - on three hits with six strikeouts and a walk to take the decision.

In Cincinnati, Felipe Lopez belted a two-run homer and Ryan Freel added a solo shot, powering the Reds to a 12-3 rout of the Washington Nationals.

Austin Kearns contributed a pair of hits to the Reds 14 hit attack driving in three runs while Freel went four-for-six scoring three runs.

In Chicago, Morgan Ensberg hit a go ahead homer and Brandon Backe tossed seven-plus solid innings to help the Astros down the Cubs 5-1.

Backe (4-3) scattered seven hits, struck out two and walked one to take credit for the win, while Dan Wheeler and Brad Lidge each contributed a scoreless inning.

Greg Maddux (2-3) suffered the loss giving up five runs on eight hits in 7 2/3 innings of work.

In St Louis, David Eckstein had a two-run homer and Yadier Molina went four-for-four with a career-high four RBIs as the Cardinals completed a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates with an 11-5 rout.

Mark Mulder (7-1) pitched seven solid innings to take credit for the win, surrendering three runs on six hits, striking out four and walking one.

In Miami, Jimmy Rollins went four-for-five with two runs scored as the Philadelphia Phillies unleashed a 17 hit attack on their way to an 8-5 win over the Florida Marlins.

Phillies starter Randy Wolf (4-4) gave up five runs on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings of work but still took credit for the win. Trailing 2-1, the Phillies took control with a four-run burst in the third, keyed by Jason Michael’s two run single to center.

In San Francisco, Pedro Feliz and Moises Alou each belted a pair of home runs as the Giants recorded their fourth straight win with a 10-2 demolition of the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Brett Tomko (4-6) provided eight sparkling inning to pick up the win, allowing two runs on five hits while striking out five and walking one.

Yankees Tame Tigers to Pick Up 14th Win in 16 Games

In Washington, Chien-Ming Wang provided 6 1/3 strong innings and Alex Rodriguez belted a go-ahead RBI double as the New York Yankees won for the 14th time in 16 games, dumping the Detroit Tigers 4-2 at Yankee Stadium on Wednesday.

Wang (3-1) allowed two runs on five hits and struck out two to collect his third straight win.

Mariano Rivera came on to get the final three outs to nail down his 10 save.

“He (Wang) was great,” Yankees manager Joe Torre said.

“He knows what he is doing out there, when the game started he pitched well.”

With the game tied at 1-1, the Yankees took control with three runs in the sixth.

Rodriguez opened the scoring with a double to deep left, bringing across Gary Sheffield.

Jorge Posada then followed up with a two-run single putting New York in front 4-1.

Detroit starter Mike Maroth (4-4) was tagged with the loss giving up four runs on eight hits in five innings of work.

In Toronto, Ted Lilly delivered 6 2/3 effective innings and Reed Johnson had two hits, two runs and an RBI in guiding the Blue Jays to 6-1 win over the Boston Red Sox.

Lilly (3-4) allowed one run on four hits then turned the game over to Vinnie Chulk and Justin Speier who came on to provide scoreless relief.

Bronson Arroyo (4-1) absorbed his first defeat since August 15, surrendering five runs - two earned - on six hits over six innings.

The righthander, making his 100th major league appearance, had won nine consecutive decisions and was riding a 17 game unbeaten run.

Toronto took a 2-0 lead in the first inning and never trailed, Gregg Zaun slapping and RBI single to left to score Johnson with the opening run.

Shea Hillenbrand then grounded into a double play but still drove in the eventual game-winning run.

In Baltimore, Rafael Palmeiro belted a two-run homer and Rodrigo Lopez tossed strong innings to lead the Orioles to a 3-1 win over the Seattle Mariners.

Palmeiro’s two-run blast, his fifth of the season, combined with a Sammy Sosa RBI sacrifice fly to give the Orioles a 3-0 first inning lead and that was all the support Lopez (3-2) would need to collect his first win since April.

The righthander allowed just one run on five hits and did not walk a batter before turning the mound over to closer B.J. Ryan, who recorded the final three outs for his 14th save of the season.

Jamie Moyer (4-2) was impressive pitching a complete game for the Mariners, but still absorbed the loss after surrendering three runs on five hits with one strikeout and one walk.

In Arlington, Richard Hidalgo and Hank Blalock had home runs and Pedro Astacio provided seven strong innings as the Texas Rangers dumped the Kansas City Royals 7-3, stretching their win streak to a season-high five games.

Astacio (2-5) held the Royals to two runs on four hits, struck out six and walked one to earn his first win since April.

Royals starter Zack Greinke (0-6) continues to search for his first win, taking the loss after giving up four runs on six hits over five innings.

Matt Stairs had a two-run homer for the Royals.

In Cleveland, Travis Hafner blooped a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the 10th inning to earn the Indians a 3-2 decision over the Minnesota Twins.

Bob Howry (3-1) worked 1 2/3 innings of scoreless relief to pick up the win while Juan Rincon (2-2) took the loss.

With the Twins clinging to a 2-1 ninth-inning lead, Cleveland’s Ben Broussard smacked a game-tying home run.

In St Petersburg, Carl Crawford, Damon Hollins and Josh Phelps all homered as the Tampa Bay Devil Rays exploded for 10 runs in the first inning then coasted to a 14-6 victory over the Oakland Athletics.

Five Devil Rays each contributed a pair of hits to Tampa Bay’s 15-hit attack, while Hollins led the way going three-for-four in scoring two runs and an RBI.

With a 10-run cushion to work with, Tampa Bay starter Scott Kazmir (2-4) picked up the win yielding two runs - one earned - on seven hits, striking out five and walking two in six innings.

In Anaheim, Paul Konerko smacked a three-run homer and Freddy Garcia delivered eight strong innings, leading the Chicago White Sox to a 4-2 victory over the Los Angeles Angels.

Garcia (5-3) gave up two runs on seven hits while striking out six and walking none while Dustin Hermanson got the final two outs for his 11th save.

The White Sox took the early lead on Konerko’s first inning three run homer then went 4-0 up in the second on Chris Widger’s solo blast.

Angels starter Jarrod Washburn (3-3) took the loss.
