CHICAGO, 30 May 2005 — Derrek Lee hit two home runs for the second consecutive game and the fourth time this season as the Chicago Cubs beat the Colorado Rockies 5-1 in National League play on Saturday at Wrigley Field.

Lee hit a solo home run in the first and a two-run homer in the Cubs four-run sixth, bringing his season total to 16, best in the National League. It was the 13th multihomer game of Lee’s career and the second time he’s hit two home runs in consecutive games.

Before the game the Cubs placed right-handed ace Mark Prior on the disabled list with a fracture in his right elbow. He was hit by a line drive in Friday night’s game. The Cubs also made two roster moves, sending former closer LaTroy Hawkins and cash considerations to the San Francisco Giants for right-handers Jerome Williams and David Aardsma.

In other NL games, Jason Michaels homered and drove in five runs as the Phillies beat the Braves 12-5 in Atlanta. Jon Lieber (6-4) allowed four earned runs on nine hits and struck out three to pick up the win.

In San Francisco, Ramon Hernandez had three hits and homered as the San Diego Padres beat the Giants 5-3. Rudy Seanez (3-0) allowed two runs on six hits, walked two and struck out two.

In Miami, Mike Piazza had three hits and drove in three runs as the New York Mets beat the Florida Marlins 6-1. Kazuhisa Ishii (1-3) pitched 6 2/3 innings allowing one run on five hits, walking three and striking out three. Miguel Cairo had three hits for the Mets.

In Milwaukee, Morgan Ensberg and Adam Everett both hit three-run homers as the Houston Astros beat the Brewers 9-6. Wandy Rodriguez (1-1) allowed four runs on nine hits over six innings for the win. Brad Lidge pitched the ninth for his ninth save and Mike Lamb drove in two runs.

In Cincinnati, Dave Williams pitched seven solid innings as the Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Reds 9-2. Williams (5-4) allowed one run on one hit, walking five and striking out five. Jason Bay, Humberto Cota and Ty Wigginton homered for the Pirates.

In St. Louis, Jeff Suppan pitched seven solid innings as the Cardinals beat the Washington Nationals 3-1. Suppan (4-5) allowed one run on four hits, walking three and striking out two.

In Phoenix, Giovanni Carrara walked Kelly Stinnett with the bases loaded in the ninth inning to give the Arizona Diamondbacks a 5-4 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Renteria’s Slam Paces 27-Hit Assault as Sox Crush Yankees

In New York, Edgar Renteria hit a grand slam home run to pace a 27-hit attack as the Boston Red Sox mauled the New York Yankees 17-1 in American League action at the Yankee Stadium on Saturday. Trot Nixon homered and drove in five runs for the Red Sox, who put up their biggest offensive display of the season to snap a four-game losing streak.

Johnny Damon had four hits and scored three runs for the Red Sox, while Manny Ramirez added four singles to the Boston offensive surge. The 27 hits were one away from the franchise record of 28 for a single game.

In other AL play, Kyle Lohse pitched seven solid innings as the Minnesota Twins beat the Blue Jays 4-3 in Toronto. Lohse (4-3) allowed one run on six hits and struck out three. Juan Castro and Shannon Stewart both homered for the Twins.

In Baltimore, Jason Johnson pitched eight strong innings as the Detroit Tigers beat the Orioles 5-3. Johnson (3-4) allowed three runs on seven hits, walking one and striking out three. Ugueth Urbina pitched one inning for his seventh save, and Craig Monroe and Omar Infante both homered for the Tigers.

Jorge Julio (1-1) pitched one inning, allowing two runs on two hits and striking out one for the loss. Miguel Tejada and Rafael Palmeiro both homered for the Orioles.

The Chicago White Sox and Texas Rangers scheduled in Arlington, game was postponed due to rain. The game will be made up when the teams play again in August.
