RIYADH, 31 May 2005 — The German School in Riyadh will cap the observance of its 30th anniversary here by holding colorful multicultural activities on June 15 with German Ambassador Dr. Gerhard Enver Schroembgens as guest of honor, according to Andreas Angermair, the school’s principal.
“On such a historic day, the German envoy will grace the occasion and witness the enthusiasm of the students and teachers in the preparation of the different activities to be presented,” Angermair told Arab News.
He said Dr. Georg Ewerharst, school board chairman, will open the ceremony, to be followed by the rendition of songs by the students and teachers. The graduating students will also receive their certificates.
Foreign guests will be invited to attend in accordance with the envisioned multicultural setting.
The school principal added that cultural activities could indeed be an effective way of binding people of different nationalities, like those who participated in the football games last Thursday at Exit 9. The event was part of the school’s 30th anniversary celebration.
“We tried to engender altruism, friendship and camaraderie among the participants in the different games,” said Dr. Salim Al-Bosta who organized and supervised the games. He’s also the coach of the German football team.
The first two games (6-7 and 8-11 year-old categories) were won by the German teams while the 12-14 year-old category was won by the French students. The Saudi team prevailed in the adult category.
“The games were friendly and nobody was hurt. The students were happy that they could play against each other in the name of friendship,” he said.
Earlier on May 19, other multicultural events were also held as part of the celebration.
