BOSTON, 1 June 2005 — David Newhan hit his first career grand slam and had five RBI as the Baltimore Orioles beat the Boston Red Sox 8-1 in American League play at Fenway Park on Monday.

Rodrigo Lopez pitched eight strong innings for the Orioles, who snapped a season-high three-game losing streak with the win.

Baltimore leads the AL East by four games over New York, Toronto and Boston after a victory that improved their major league-best road record to 14-5. Lopez (4-2) allowed one unearned run on six hits with five strikeouts and two walks before Steve Kline finished up.

Miguel Tejada had three hits and drove in a run for the Orioles while Melvin Mora added two hits and an RBI.

Bronson Arroyo (4-2) allowed seven runs on 10 hits in just 2 2/3 innings, striking out three and walking two, to take the loss. Johnny Damon and John Olerud both had two hits for the Red Sox.

In other games, Aaron Rowand had two hits and drove in two runs as the White Sox beat the Los Angeles Angels 5-4 in Chicago.

Cliff Politte (1-0) pitched one out for the win. Timo Perez drove in two runs for the White Sox. Scot Shields (4-2) got two outs, allowing two runs on one hit, walking two and striking out one to take the loss. Steve Finley had three hits and homered for the Angels.

In Seattle, Jamie Moyer pitched six strong innings as the Mariners beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3. Moyer (5-2) won his 131st game as a Mariner, passing Randy Johnson for the most wins in franchise history. Moyer allowed one run on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts, Eddie Guardado got the last three outs for his 14th save and Richie Sexson homered and drove in three runs for Seattle.

Ted Lilly (3-5) allowed four runs on six hits with three strikeouts and three walks for the loss. Orlando Hudson and Reed Johnson homered for Toronto.

In Oakland, Mark Kotsay drove in the winning run with an 11th inning single and Bobby Kielty homered as the Athletics beat the Tampa Bay Devil Rays 5-4. Huston Street (2-1) pitched 1 2/3 innings, striking out three, for the win.

Travis Harper (1-3) pitched 1 2/3 innings, allowing one run on three hits to take the loss.

Harang Outfoxes Clemens as Reds Blank Astros

In Houston Aaron Harang pitched seven shutout innings and Joe Randa homered and drove in three runs as the Cincinnati Reds blanked the Astros 9-0 in National League play in Houston on Monday.

Harang (4-2) allowed just five hits and struck out 10 and walked one after missing his previous start due to illness.

His strong performance helped him get the better of Roger Clemens, who pitched eight strong innings before leaving the game trailing 2-0.

The Reds scored seven runs in the ninth inning to turn what was a pitcher’s duel into a rout, with Ryan Freel hitting a three-run homer in the ninth.

Randa also led the Reds 10-hit attack with three hits, while Sean Casey added a pair of hits for the Reds.

Clemens (3-3) allowed two runs on four hits with seven strikeouts and one walk, leaving him with an ERA of just 1.30 despite the loss. Houston had just five hits, two of them by Willy Tavares, as the Astros were shut out for a NL-leading ninth time this season.

In other games, Freddy Sanchez drove in the winning run with a 10th inning single as the Pirates beat the Florida Marlins 3-2 in Pittsburgh.

Jose Castillo had two hits and Rick White (2-2) pitched two innings, allowing one hit and walking one for the win.

In Washington, Marlon Byrd had two hits and drove in two runs as the Nationals beat the Atlanta Braves 3-2. Tomo Okha (4-3) pitched seven innings, allowing one run on three hits and walking four.

In Los Angeles, Greg Maddux pitched six solid innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 5-3. Maddux (3-3) allowed one earned run on five hits and struck out three.

In Denver, Albert Pujols hit a three run homer as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Rockies 5-4. Jason Marquis (6-3) pitched six innings, allowing two earned runs on four hits, walking five and striking out four.

In San Diego, Miguel Ojeda doubled in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the San Diego Padres past the Milwaukee Brewers 2-1. Geoff Blum and Phil Nevin both had two hits for the Padres.
