PALO ALTO, California, 1 June 2005 — Reigning world 200m champion John Capel won the 100m title here Monday at the US Open athletics championship and fellow American John Godina won the meet shot put crown for the fifth time in a row.
Capel, aided by a 1.3 ms tailwind, won in 10.08 with Jamaica’s Dwight Thomas second in 10.12 and American Brian Lewis third in 10.16.
Capel will try to qualify for the World Championships in the 100m and 200m at the US Championships in 3 1-2 weeks at Carson, California.
He hopes to follow Maurice Greene and Marion Jones in taking both world sprint crowns. To have his chance, Capel will have to withstand eight grueling qualifying races at the US meet. That’s why he raced here on the US Memorial Day.
Three-time world shot put champion Godina won with a 21.93m effort, second in the world this year to give him the four best distances in the world in 2005.
Dominique Arnold won the 110m hurdles in 13.21 and David Krummenacker won the 800m in 1:45.19.
American Muna Lee won the women’s 100m in 11.16 seconds and Athens Olympic heptathlete Michelle Perry won the 100m hurdles in a personal best of 12.65 seconds.
