LAUSANNE, Switzerland, 1 June 2005 — Cities aiming to host the 2014 Winter Olympics must submit their application by July 28, the International Olympic Committee announced yesterday.

That will launch the selection process leading to the announcement of the host for the 2014 Winter Games at the IOC’s session in Guatemala City in July 2007, the Olympic body said in a statement. The IOC’s executive board will formally accept candidate cities after assessing answers to a questionnaire in June 2006, while an evaluation commission will visit candidate cities in February or March 2007, it added. Olympic chief Jacques Rogge yesterday ruled out the possibility of two or more countries organizing the Winter Olympics. “We must be realistic. The organization of the Olympic Games is very complex due to the number of sports and the participants,” he said.
