JEDDAH, 7 June 2005 — A local sheikh who is known as a marriage counselor divorced his wife after being married only a few hours, Al-Watan newspaper reported yesterday.

The woman told Al-Watan that she called the sheikh when she had marriage problems with her husband. After the couple was divorced, the sheikh asked her to marry him and she agreed.

They spent their wedding night in a hotel and the next morning, the sheikh said he had an errand and he would drive her to her family since he did not want her to remain in the hotel alone.

The next day she learned from the sheikh’s secretary that he had divorced her.

“I was shocked because it happened so fast and I had done nothing wrong,” she said. “When he finally answered my calls, he told me that he regretted the decision and wanted me back.”

He came back to her but after spending the night, he left again ad divorced her for the second time, claiming that his third wife would not agree for him to have four wives.

“I wonder if this is proper behavior for a sheikh who is supposed to support married life and the sanctity of family. He was only concerned about getting what he wanted and then leaving,” she said.

Al-Watan tried to contact the sheikh but was unable to reach him.
