JEDDAH, 9 June 2005 — Police in Jeddah are investigating the case of a man beaten up when he went to ask for a woman’s hand, Al-Watan reported. The man was so badly beaten that he was sent to hospital for treatment. Initially when the man, a teacher, went to the family to ask for their daughter’s hand, he was welcomed with smiles and hospitality. This all changed, however, when the family learned that he was married with children and wanted to contract a misyar marriage with their daughter. (In such marriages, the man has no legal obligation to the woman.) In other words, she would remain in her family home and he would visit her once a week. The girl’s father and his sons were so angered that they beat the man up. He later went to the police and complained; while there, he found his first wife and her brother there and they too attacked him for trying to marry another wife.
