JEDDAH, 13 June 2005 — Saudi Arabia yesterday reaffirmed that it does not possess any nuclear facilities or reactors and said it is committed to international charters related to nuclear energy. In a statement, a Foreign Ministry official also said the Kingdom was ready to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
“We have joined all international agreements and charters that limit the spread of weapons of mass destruction out of our support to international efforts to prevent their dangers and peaceful coexistence of nations,” the Saudi Press Agency quoted the official as saying.
The statement, which came on the eve of a meeting of the IAEA board of governors in Vienna, said the Kingdom’s policies were in line with international charters including the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and related agreements such as the Small Quantities Protocol. Saudi Arabia backs efforts aimed at establishing zones free of nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction, he added.
