TORONTO, 13 June 2005 — Randy Johnson delivered seven shutout innings while Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez each drove in a pair of runs as the New York Yankees blanked the St Louis Cardinals 5-0 in Interleague play at Busch Stadium on Saturday.

With just two wins in 10 games, New York manager Joe Torre reportedly blasted his players in a meeting before the game and the team responded with one of their better performances in what has been a turbulent season.

Johnson (6-5), the Yankees prize off-season signing who had come under attack following consecutive losses, answered his critics with a dominating effort, retiring 11 of the first 12 batters he faced, striking out seven without a walk to earn the decision.

In Chicago, Todd Hollandsworth had three hits and three RBIs and Todd Walker scored three runs as the Cubs rallied from 4-0 down and then held on to edge the Boston Red Sox 7-6.

In Atlanta, John Smoltz tossed the complete game and Andruw Jones belted two home runs as the Braves beat the Oakland Athletics 5-3.

In Miami, Alex Gonzalez slammed a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift the Florida Marlins to a 6-5 win over the Texas Rangers.

In Cincinnati, Felipe Lopez belted grand slam and drove in a career high six runs and Adam Dunn added a two-run shot as the Reds crushed the Baltimore Orioles 10-1.

In Houston, Morgan Ensberg crushed a ninth inning three-run homer, lifting the Astros to a 6-3 win over the Toronto Blue Jays for the their fourth consecutive victory.

Chris Burke, Lance Berkman and Adam Everett each had an RBI for the Astros.

In Washington, John Patterson pitched seven solid innings and Jose Guillen hit a game-winning seventh inning bases-loaded single as the Nationals extended their season high winning run to nine games with a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

In Pittsburgh, Jose Castillo homered and drove in five runs to lead the Pirates to an 18-2 demolition of the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Daryle Ward contributed a pair of hits and four RBIs to the Pirates total, while Ryan Doumit also had three RBIs and scored three runs.

In New York, Cliff Floyd hit a 10th inning two-out three-run homer to lift the New York Mets to a 5-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels.

In Denver, Rondell White had three hits and a pair of RBIs while Brandon Inge smacked home the go-ahead run with a sixth inning single, helping the Detroit Tigers to a 6-4 decision over the Colorado Rockies.

In Los Angeles, Justin Morneau had a home run and drove in four runs and Torii Hunter added a solo shot, sparking the Minnesota Twins to a 5-3 win over the Dodgers.

In San Diego, Ramon Hernandez had a ninth inning homer to tie the game then Damian Jackson singled home the winning run as the Padres edged the Chicago White Sox 2-1.

In Phoenix, John Buck smacked a two-run homer and Emil Brown had three doubles, leading the Kansas City Royals to an 8-5 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Tony Clark and Shawn Green each had a home run for Arizona.

In San Francisco, Ronnie Belliard homered and drove in two runs while Grady Sizemore and Victor Martinez each had two RBIs as the Cleveland Indians slipped past the Giants 7-6.

Burrell Blast Powers Phillies Past Brewers

Meantime, Pat Burrell crushed a three-run homer in the seventh to power the Philadelphia Phillies past the slumping Milwaukee Brewers 7-5 in National League action at Citizens Bank Park on Saturday.

After the Brewers scored twice in the top of the seventh to nudge 5-4 in front, Burrell answered in the bottom of the inning with his 13th homer of the season.

His three-run blast over the wall in deep left scored Bobby Abreu and Jason Michaels to put the Phillies in front to stay.
