NEW YORK, 19 June 2005 — Hideki Matsui homered and drove in five runs as the New York Yankees beat the Chicago Cubs 9-6 in Interleague play on Friday night at Yankee Stadium.
Matsui capped a three-run seventh inning rally with his homer, added a two-run double in the eighth inning and also had an RBI single as the Yankees won their fourth straight game.
The Cubs were making their first appearance at Yankee Stadium in 67 years. Chicago is now 0-5 lifetime at Yankee Stadium after being swept in the World Series in both 1932 and 1938.
In other Interleague games, Jason Schmidt pitched eight strong innings as the San Francisco Giants beat the Tigers 4-0. Schmidt (4-3) allowed seven hits, walking one and striking out five.
In Kansas City, Morgan Ensberg homered as the Houston Astros beat the Royals 7-0.
Roger Clemens (5-3) pitched six shutout innings, allowing four hits, walking three and striking out six for the win. Eric Bruntlett also homered for the Astros. J.P.
In Arlington, Hank Blalock and Kevin Mench both homered as the Texas Rangers beat the Washington Nationals 8-1. Kenny Rogers (9-2) pitched 6-1/3 innings, allowing one run on eight hits.
In Cleveland, Casey Blake, Jhonny Peralta and Grady Sizemore all homered as the Indians beat the Arizona Diamondbacks 13-6. Cliff Lee (8-3) pitched five innings, allowing four runs on eight hits, walking three and striking out four for the win.
In Boston, Mark Bellhorn had a three-run homer as the Red Sox beat the Pittsburgh Pirates 6-5. Keith Foulke (4-3) pitched one inning, striking out two for the win.
In Toronto, Frank Menechino had two homers as the Blue Jays beat the Milwaukee Brewers 9-5. Pete Walker (2-0) pitched three innings, allowing one run on one hit, walking two and striking out two for the win.
In St. Petersburg, Mark Mulder pitched seven strong innings as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Devil Rays 6-4. Mulder (8-4) allowed three runs on four hits, walking two and striking out one. Jason Isringhausen pitched one inning for his 19th save.
In Baltimore, Jason Jennings pitched seven solid innings, as the Colorado Rockies beat the Orioles 2-1.
Jennings (4-7) allowed six hits, walking five and striking out seven Brian Fuentes pitched one inning for his seventh save.
In Chicago, Mark Buehrle pitched a complete game as the White Sox beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 6-0. Buehrle (8-1) allowed eight hits and struck out six. Jermaine Dye and Frank Thomas both homered for the White Sox.
In Minneapolis, Glenn Williams’ RBI single in the bottom of the 11th to give the Minnesota Twins a 5-4 victory over the San Diego Padres.
Juan Rincon (4-2) pitched two innings, allowing one hit and striking out three for the win.
In Seattle, Ichiro Suzuki hit a three-run homer as the Mariners blanked the New York Mets 5-0. Jamie Moyer (6-2) pitched 7-2/3 shutout innings for the win, allowing just six hits.
In Oakland, Todd Pratt drove in three runs as the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Athletics 6-1.
Robinson Tejeda (1-0) went 5-2/3 shutout innings for his first major league win, allowing four hits.
In Anaheim, Jeff DaVanon drove in the winning run with an 11th inning single as the Los Angeles Angels edged the Florida Marlins 3-2.
Rookie Johnson Drives in Six as Braves Hammer Reds
Rookie Kenny Johnson hit two homers, including a grand slam, and drove in six runs as the Atlanta Braves beat the Cincinnati Reds 10-5 in the lone National League game on Friday night in Cincinnati. Johnson hit a two-run homer in the first and a slam in the sixth while Andruw Jones also homered twice.
Atlanta’s five home runs in the game — Wilson Betemit also homered for the Braves — tied a season high for the club.
Cincinnati lost for the fifth straight game, with the five homers the most the Reds have given up in a single game this season.
Rafael Furcal had three of Atlanta’s 16 hits and also scored twice, while Betemit also wound up with three hits.
