PHILADELPHIA, 23 June 2005 — Doug Mientkiewicz and Brian Daubach both homered as the New York Mets beat the Philadelphia Phillies 8-5 in National League action at Citizens Bank Park on Tuesday.

Jose Reyes had three hits for the Mets, who pounded out 14 hits to snap a three-game losing streak. New York had also lost nine of 11.

Carlos Beltran had two hits and drove in two runs for the Mets, while Kris Benson pitched six solid innings for the win. Benson (6-2) allowed five runs — four earned — on nine hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Three relievers finished up, including Braden Looper, who pitched the ninth for his 14th save.

In other games, Javier Valentin hit a three-run homer as the Reds beat the St. Louis Cardinals 11-4 in Cincinnati. Brandon Claussen (4-4) pitched six innings, allowing four runs — three earned — on seven hits and walking two for the win. Joe Randa homered for the Reds.

Jason Marquis (8-5) pitched 2 1/3 innings, allowing 10 runs — three earned — on seven hits, walking three and striking out one to take the loss.

In Atlanta, John Smoltz pitched a complete game five-hitter as the Braves beat the Florida Marlins 5-0. Smoltz (7-5) allowed five hits, walking two and striking out six. Andruw Jones homered for the Braves. A.J. Burnett (4-5) pitched six innings, allowing three runs on three hits, walking three and striking out four to take the loss.

In Pittsburgh, Matt Lawton homered and drove in five runs as the Pirates beat the Washington Nationals 11-4. Oliver Perez (6-5) pitched five innings, allowing three runs on five hits, walking three and striking out six for the win.

In Milwaukee, Jerome Williams pitched seven solid innings as the Chicago Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-2. Williams (1-2) allowed two runs on three hits, walking four and striking out six.

In Houston, Lance Berkman had two hits and drove in two runs the Astros beat the Colorado Rockies 6-5. Chad Qualls (2-3) got one out for the win. Brad Lidge pitched one inning for his 17th save.

In San Diego, Woody Williams pitched 6 2/3 solid innings as the Padres edged the Los Angeles Dodgers 2-1, on the same day the Dodgers found out that would be without closer Eric Gagne for the rest of the season.

In San Francisco, Chad Tracy hit a two-run homer as the Arizona Diamondbacks got past the Giants 6-4.
