RIYADH, 27 June 2005 — The conjoined Egyptian twins, Alaa and Walaa, who were separated by a 35-member medical team headed by Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah on Saturday, are now in stable condition, the King Abdul Aziz Medical City for National Guard announced yesterday.
Speaking to reporters, Dr. Al-Rabeeah described the operation as successful. “They are stable in the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Their vital signs are stable, and there is no sign of complications,” he added.
The infants are on artificial respirators and are receiving sedatives to alleviate any pain. Dr. Al-Rabeeah said the twins are expected to remain in the PICU for two to three weeks.
The twins’ parents were delighted when they saw their children on two separate beds. A number of their friends and relatives came to the hospital to express their joy at the success of the operation.
