Iridian Technologies has joined a pilot program which will employ its iris recognition solution for administrative control in the allocation of some 9,000 affordable homes in Guntur district of Andhra Pradesh, India.
Under the Rajiv Gruha Kalpa, an affordable housing program for the urban poor initiated by the Department of Housing in Andhra Pradesh, an initial stock of affordable homes in Guntur district will be made available, with an enrollment process that incorporates iris recognition of applicant couples to prevent duplicate applications. This will ensure that every family eligible for aid has an equal opportunity.
Iridian’s ProofPositive technology enables a simple procedure for capturing and digitally encoding an image of the irises of the expected applicants. Database storage of the encoded image allows the authorities to efficiently manage the identity of affordable housing beneficiaries, as well as other welfare programs available through the state. Identity is managed through Iridian’s certified technology, including Panasonic’s BM-ET100 cameras.
“Current plans call for 9,000 affordable homes of the planned 200,000 Andhra Pradesh housing welfare scheme to be in the Guntur district and we look forward to proving that iris recognition is an effective means of keeping administrative control over such a complex undertaking,” stated Jaya Lakshmi, the Guntur district collector. The Rajiv Gruha Kalpa program is intended to allow poor and working poor families who currently rent substandard housing to own their own homes. Lakshmi noted that even at this early stage, the trial has already disclosed at least two cases of ineligible applications.
