JEDDAH, 21 July 2005 — Hosts Saudi Arabia scored their second victory by beating Yemen 93-77, while Algeria blasted an overmatched Iraqi squad 104-52 during the third day of action yesterday in the 16th Arab Basketball Championship at the King Fahd Sports Complex’s stadium here.
Yemen led after the first quarter 26-19, as the Saudis missed seven free throws. But after the break, Saudi Arabia hit their stride and took control behind good three-point shooting, defense, and several steals.
Yemen had 18 fouls in the first half. By the end of the game, three players had fouled out.
With balanced scoring and rebounding, Saudi Arabia went on to score the win. They beat Somalia in their first game.
The elimination games continue today with Jordan taking on Somalia at 4 p.m., Morocco battling Sudan at 6 p.m. and Palestine facing Tunisia at 8 p.m.
