RIYADH, 25 July 2005 — Deputy Minister of Labor Dr. Ahmed Al-Zamil announced the formation of a special department to safeguard the rights of guest workers — and impose sanctions on employers who abuse them.

Speaking yesterday during a Riyadh press conference, Dr. Al-Zamil said the Department of Protection of Domestic Workers will receive complaints from housemaids who have been sexually harassed, mistreated or who have not been given their salaries. “If it is proven that an employer has not paid his maid, we will ban him from applying for any domestic house worker for five years,” Dr. Al-Zamil told reporters.
