RIYADH/JEDDAH, 4 August 2005 — Thousands of Saudis lined up at offices and palaces of regional governors yesterday to pledge their allegiance and support for the new king and crown prince. The Saudis wished their new rulers every success and pledged they would stand by their government.
Saudis in Jeddah flocked to the palace of Makkah Governor Prince Abdul Majeed, who accepted their pledges of allegiance. They included academics, Islamic scholars, security officers, farmers and businessmen as well as the young, the old and children.
The citizens of Asir region paid their allegiance to Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah and Crown Prince Sultan and that they would follow the Qur’an and the Prophet’s Sunna as a constitution for the Kingdom.
On behalf of King Abdullah, Asir Governor Prince Khaled Al-Faisal and his deputy Prince Faisal ibn Khaled ibn Abdul Aziz received citizens at the Asir Governorate.
Sheikhs, judges, tribal leaders, heads of government departments, and officers from the armed forces were among those who came to the governorate yesterday.
Large numbers of citizens in the Eastern Province also went to the governorate to express their allegiance to the new king and the crown prince. Prince Jalawi ibn Abdul Aziz ibn Musaid, deputy governor of the Eastern Province, officiated at the event.
Citizens in Tabuk and its surrounding provinces also paid their allegiance to their new leader. Tabuk Governor Prince Fahd ibn Sultan said: “Today marks a new day in the history of the country and Ummah.”
In Taif, Abdullah Al-Fayez, undersecretary of the Makkah governorate, officiated at the process. In Madinah, Governor Prince Muqrin received citizens who came to pledge their allegiance.
