CALICUT, 19 August 2005 — The Supreme Court of India yesterday dismissed the bail petition of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Abdul Nazar Madani.
The PDP chief is an accused in the Coimbatore serial blasts case in which 59 people were killed. The blast occurred on Feb. 14 1998, shortly before senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani was to address an election campaign meeting in the city.
Madani had requested in the petition filed through his counsel Sushil Kumar that he be allowed to go to a particular Ayurvedic Center in Kerala for treatment.
The Supreme Court bench comprising Justice H.K. Sema and B.N. Srikrishna, however, ruled that the reports submitted by medical experts say Madani was refusing treatment by the doctors in the jail.
The court also dismissed a habeas corpus petition filed by Madani’s wife Sufiya challenging his prolonged detention.
