KARACHI, 22 August 2005 — Several bogies of a goods train traveling from Karachi to interior of Sindh derailed after a blast at railway bridge in Malir yesterday. Two policemen were injured in the incident, officials said.
The blast destroyed a track completely when the goods train arrived at the Malir railway bridge and eight bogies of the train were derailed, Lahore bound Super goods train driver and the police guard said.
The railway traffic was disturbed in this section after the explosion. The railway officials said repair of the damaged track could take about 24 hours.
The bomb disposal squad and police with relief teams arrived on the spot of the incident and were investigating cause of the explosion.
A police official, Qasim Ghauri, however said nothing was found at the scene to indicate a bombing. “There is no evidence that anything has been blown up — either a carriage or the track — as happens in a bomb explosion,” Ghauri said.
The train was transporting plastic bags from Karachi to Lahore when it derailed. Junaid Qureshi, a railway official, said six trains scheduled to arrive in Karachi or leave the city were disrupted by the derailment.
