JEDDAH, 26 August 2005 — In a crackdown, security forces raided 534 houses and apprehended 1,477 illegal overstayers in Jeddah in the early hours of Wednesday.
The security raid targeted districts in the Red Sea port city for 11 particular crime cases.
Police arrested two Bangladeshi workers who impersonated doctors and who turned their apartment into a medical clinic in Al-Jamiah District.
A few weeks ago police discovered a clinic in Makkah where abortion was carried out. The clinic was run by a Nigerian.
Police said they also found an abortion clinic in Jeddah a few months back.
During Wednesday’s operation that went on for more then four hours police arrested three people suspected of robberies and car thefts.
“The suspects are accused of a number of robberies in the city,” said the police officer who arrested them. “Fingerprints lead to most of arrests,” he said.
Four alcohol-manufacturing places were busted and closed down by police after the raids, tens of gallons of liquor were destroyed.
Brig. Gen. Misfer Al-Zuhami, head of Jeddah police led eleven security and government agencies during the raids.
Pornographic CDs and satellite “X” rated channels access cards were found during the raids.
