ISLAMABAD, 24 September 2005 — Pakistan appointed a new navy chief, Vice Adm. Muhammad Afzal Tahir, after he was promoted to the rank of admiral, the state-run news agency reported yesterday.
Tahir will replace Adm. Shahid Karimullah, whose term expires on Oct. 6, after being appointed by President Pervez Musharraf, sources said.
In Pakistan, heads of the armed forces are appointed by the president.
Tahir was born on Jan. 4, 1949. He joined Naval Aviation in 1973 and later qualified as a helicopter warfare instructor. He is a graduate of Joint Services Staff College and National Defense College of Pakistan.
