ABHA, 3 September 2006 — It was just another evening Isha prayer in this southern Saudi city until the folks got up to leave, the daily Al-Watan reported yesterday. It was then that a man wielding a knife made the most unusual threat to the dozens of worshippers: He said he would stab anyone who tried to leave. The man was eventually brought under control by some of the men in the mosque and later arrested. The motive for the unusual hostage situation is still unknown.
Seatbelt Holds Suspect in Place Until Police Arrive
JEDDAH, 3 September 2006 — Police here made a really easy arrest after a jammed seatbelt prevented a suspect wanted for forgery from escaping before they could nab him, the daily Al-Riyadh reported yesterday. After a car chase, police managed to corner the suspect in a narrow street. The man tried to escape on foot, but he couldn’t figure out how to unbuckle his seat belt. Police helped him out, then quickly slapped on the handcuffs.
