HAIL, 4 August 2006 — A quick-thinking Sudanese gas truck driver saved a neighborhood from a major disaster when he noticed a fire in his truck while emptying his cargo into an underground tank at a gas station in Hail, Al-Riyadh daily said yesterday. On seeing the fire the driver jumped into his truck and drove at least 150 meters away from the gas station, which was located in the center of a residential area. A fire engine soon arrived at the scene and put out the flames. Fire officers said the driver’s courage had averted a catastrophe.
Workers Fall From Seventh Floor, 2 Die
MAKKAH, 4 August 2006 — Two Asian construction workers were killed and two others seriously injured when they fell from the 12th floor of a high-rise building in Makkah, Al-Riyadh newspaper reported yesterday. The injured men were taken to Al-Noor Hospital while the bodies of the dead workers were kept in the morgue of a nearby hospital pending investigation. Civil defense officers said a rope that had been used by the four workers to dangle on the side of the building while undertaking repair work had broken causing the four men to fall.
30 Injured in Highway Accident
RIYADH, 4 August 2006 — A bus carrying more than 50 people overturned on Riyadh-Dammam highway injuring 30 passengers, Al-Riyadh reported yesterday. Eight of the injured are said to be in critical condition. Fire engines and around 13 ambulances came to the crash site and took the injured passengers to King Fahd Hospital. Police suspect speeding as the cause of the accident.
