Homeland Safety Signs New Agent

Paul Johnson, president of Homeland Safety International (HSFI), announced that the security vendor has signed a new distributor for Saudi Arabia. In cooperation with CRC Marketing of Corpus Christi, Texas, Alraedah International Co. will serve as Homeland Safety’s new distributor for the Kingdom. Alraedah is a security contractor for the Ministry of Interior and Saudi Oger. Its Security Division provides installation, solutions and engineering services for systems such as security, surveillance, fire alarm, access control, public address, structural cabling and telecommunication.

“This agreement is a very important addition to our team of representatives and we believe that the signing of Alraedah will produce excellent short-term sales results given their long and successful history in the security industry,” stated Johnson. “We have already seen examples of how quickly they can get to very high level decision-makers and have seen their ability to promote several different products through their established channels.”

Former CA Chief Sentenced to Prison

Once a source of pride for Sri Lanka, former Computer Associates CEO Sanjay Kumar was sentenced on Thursday to 12 years in a US prison for his role in a $2.2 billion accounting scandal. Born in Colombo, Kumar, 44, was given prison term and an $8 million fine by US District Court Judge Leo Glasser in Brooklyn, NY. Kumar could have received as long as 20 years.

According to many published reports, before sentencing Kumar told the judge, “I know that I was wrong, and there was no excuse for my conduct.”

This was the conclusion of a sad chapter in US corporate history. Back in April, Kumar and co-defendant Stephen Richards, once a top CA sales executive, pleaded guilty to a nine-count indictment charging them with securities fraud, conspiracy and obstruction of justice, making false Securities and Exchange Commission filings, perjury and making false statements. The two men had initally pleaded not guilty.

The original indictment had been revised to include charges that Kumar authorized what amounted to a $3.7 million bribe in 2003 to keep a business client from disclosing CA’s illegal accounting practices. Kumar was attempting to hide an illegal practice of maximizing CA’s earnings through the use of a “35-day month” scheme which allowed the company to book licensing revenue it hadn’t yet received.

Other senior CA executives have already pleaded guilty to charges related to the federal case against CA, which has been settled. The company has thus far avoided prosecution by agreeing to undertake strict compliance and record-keeping procedures, and it set up a restitution fund of $225 million to repay past and present shareholders for losses caused by improper accounting activities.
