BHOPAL, 20 August 2006 — The rain fury which had wreaked havoc four days back in Bhopal, the capital of central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, and the adjoining areas including the state’s eastern part opened its fangs once again forcing residents to run for cover.
The death toll due to rain-related incidents in Madhya Pradesh has climbed to 79. Two people died in Hoshangabad due to a house collapse and three in Ratlam while one person was washed away in floodwaters near Eintkhedi village.
Bhopal had received a record 12 inches of rainfall in 12 hours on the intervening night of Aug. 13-14. Besides 21 lives, loss of property to the tune of Rs. 70 million was reported. This time round an average rainfall of 73.9 mm was recorded in the last 24 hours in Bhopal. The low-lying areas were inundated in Bhopal, Hoshangabad, Indore and Vidisha for the second time in a week with several rivers and rivulets, including the Narmada, being in spate.
