DHAKA, 9 April 2006 — A powerful storm lashed several parts of Bangladesh yesterday leaving at least seven people dead and over 500 injured. Many people were injured by flying debris.
Nearly 500 houses were flattened and crops were damaged when the storm winds up to 100 km per hour swept through Bhuapur, 130 kilometers northwest of Dhaka.
The storm also wreaked havoc in seven villages of Kazipara sub-district killing three people and injuring 200 others. The affected villages were Muslimpara, Boraitali, Biyara, Megai, Sindabari, Charpara and Khudbandi. Many houses collapsed and a large number of trees were uprooted in these villages.
In Kamarkand, the storm hit eight villages early yesterday injuring 50 people. A woman identified as Karuna Begum of Khamar Baradhul village died when her house collapsed. A woman and her teenage daughter were crushed to death when a tree fell in Sirajganj district.
Meanwhile, hailstorm caused extensive damage to standing crops and vegetables in Pabna Sadar and Atghara sub-districts.
In Tangail district, the storm lashed Gobindasi union in Bhuiyanpur sub-district Friday night leaving a man dead and 50 people injured. The dead was identified as Alamgir Hossain of Bhalukutia village. The worst affected villages were Bhalukutia, Konabari, Ruhuli, Barkatpur, Kashtipara and Bara Nikla.
At least 10 people died and many injured in storms that have swept through different parts of the country over the past week.
