RIYADH, 16 April 2006 — The foreign widow of a Saudi man here has been harassed mentally and exploited financially by her in-laws.

The 62-year-old woman has been driven out of her husband’s house following his death two years ago. Her power of attorney was exploited to prepare documents of a non-existent marriage with a greedy man and wean her off her share of inheritance, Al-Watan newspaper reported.

Shortly after her husband’s death, his sons from another wife demanded that she vacate the family house because they want to sell it. As her share of the inheritance, they gave her a check, which she could not cash because they had taken her passport and iqama.

Unable to find the means for a living, the old woman had to knock the doors of her neighbors. She now lives with a Saudi family.

In the meantime, a family friend prepared false documents to prove that he was her second husband. He managed this by telling her brother on the telephone in her home country that she was in jail and he could help her only if he was her husband.

He requested her brother to marry her to him and thus secure her freedom. The brother complied without verifying the facts.
