BOMBAY, 2 May 2006 — The condition of BJP leader Pramod Mahajan was reported “critical” yesterday evening. Dr. Anupam Varma, spokesman of Hinduja Hospital, said Mahajan was still on multiple organ support in the form of mechanical ventilation, and showed signs of acute respiratory difficulties, which were due to complications in the respiratory system.
Varma said Mahajan had developed acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). “This is a known and feared complication in patients with extensive multiple trauma, massive blood transfusions and systematic sepsis (infections).”
The sudden change in the health of Mahajan is a cause for concern for the doctors, said Varma.
