JEDDAH, 1 September 2006 — Five million water conservation kits will be distributed among households, government departments and private companies during the fourth phase of a national campaign to promote prudent use of water.
“This is a continuation of the previous phases of the campaign that aims at educating people on the need to preserve the country’s valuable water resources,” said Minister of Water and Electricity Abdullah Al-Hussayen.
The minister urged the cooperation of all parties to make the campaign a success. He said the first phase of the campaign helped in saving 30 percent of wasted water as a result of distributing more than 30 million conservation kits.
“The first phase also witnessed installation of more than 80 percent of conservation kits distributed during the campaign,” Al-Hussayen said, adding that the new conservation kits for showers would be available at sale points of the water department, supermarkets and the exhibition center at the ministry’s headquarters. The second phase of the campaign, which was focused on public infrastructure facilities and government buildings, saw the distribution of 1.3 million conservation kits. “This phase helped in saving 25 to 50 percent of water,” Al-Hussayen said.
He said the third phase focused on the private sector that consumes 20 percent of water. More than 900,000 conservation kits have been distributed among private firms during this period. “This measure helped save about 40 percent of wasted water at hotels and other service facilities,” he pointed out.
“Water is the Kingdom’s most valuable resource, and its management and protection is of paramount importance,” Al-Hussayen said, adding that one million cubic meters of water is wasted in the Kingdom every day.
