CAIRO, 7 May 2006 — Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said yesterday that the Middle East peace road map needed to be modified and called on the Palestinians to clarify their position toward its principles. “The road map needs to be modified because its expiry date was last year in 2005,” Aboul Gheit said at a conference in the Mediterranean city of Alexandria.
Palestinians need to “create a clear work plan to define the Palestinian Authority’s position on the principles fixed by the Quartet,” Aboul Gheit said. “The language of negotiation is the only way to solve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict,” he said.
Meanwhile, thousands of Palestinians calling for immediate revenge against Israel marched through the streets of Gaza yesterday morning in a funeral procession for five Palestinians killed Friday by Israeli airstrikes.
The five, members of the Popular Resistance Committees, were at the group’s training camp in Gaza City when an Israeli drone fired a missile which hit the camp, Palestinians said. The mourners carried the bodies of the dead wrapped in the group’s black flag directly from the hospital to Gaza’s main cemetery on their shoulders.
At least three Palestinian farmers were injured yesterday by shrapnel from shells fired by Israel into northern Gaza Strip, medical sources and witnesses said.
