JEDDAH, 26 May 2006 – Police rescued a woman and her children from a knife-wielding housemaid in the Al-Salama district of Taif on Wednesday.

According to Al-Watan, a local Arabic newspaper, the Asian maid threatened to kill the woman and her children with a knife after they fell into an argument. The woman and children then locked themselves into a bedroom and telephoned the police for help.

The police arrived quickly at the scene forcing themselves into the home and disarming the maid. The maid was arrested and handed over to government officials that deal with deportation of foreign workers.

The woman, whose husband was away from home at the time, then came out of the room and explained why the maid had become so furious. The woman added that this was not the first time the maid had reacted in such a violent manner.

Regarding news elsewhere, police reported how an employer found the body of an Asian worker hanging from a fan in Tirba. The man had failed to arrive to work at a farm on Tuesday morning prompting the employer to go to the man’s room close by. When he found the room locked he called for some other workers who forced their entry to find the man dead and hanging from a ceiling fan.

According to friends the man had a history of mental illness. The coroner at a hospital in Tirab passed a verdict of suicide.

Girl Shot and Injured

A youth, involved in a fight involving six people, shot and injured a 15-year girl on Wednesday morning in Dammam, Al-Watan newspaper reported .
