YANBU, 26 October 2006 — There’s a saying in the US about spending “quality time” with your family. It’s supposed to mean that in the time busy families spend with each other they should be doing constructive things that bring them closer together. Al Franken disagrees. The well-known US comedian once said that families should not spend quality time with each other, but rather “quantity time”. Meaning, of course, that families should simply spend more time with each other rather than trying to make the best of less time. A businessman in Yanbu should take Franken’s wise advice to heart, and he should definitely listen to what his eight-year-old daughter said to him when he gave her the post-Ramadan presents. She refused them and complained that her father spends too much time away from home on his business travels. According to the story in yesterday’s Al-Madinah daily, the girl told her father to keep the presents and simply give her more of his presence.
