RIYADH, 27 May 2006 — Dirab Golf Club course was again rendered defenseless by the battering it got from the fresh group of winners in the Mitsubishi May Monthly Medal golf tournament yesterday.

An sparkling eight-under net score of 64 from Thai Boonyuen went on record as the best of the 19 scores that beat par in superb conditions.

Garry Barber, a lanky returning British member at Dirab who hits the ball a long way, shared center stage with Second Division (10-18 handicap) winner Boonyuen when he conquered the flat but challenging Dirab layout in two-under 70 for the Best Gross crown.

A winner here two months back, Barber, with a 2 handicap, had a net 68 but under the rule of only one major prize per golfer Filipino ace Alex Arellano claimed the First Division (0-9) title with a net 69.

Arellano, with an 8 handicap, finished with a gross 77 as he sustained a stretch of good scoring in the last two weeks or so.

Korean M.S. Kim and Jeff Goble were second and third by countback after both players signed for a 71.

Ian Holmes, a 14 handicapper like the stocky Boonyuen, came in second in the division at 67 with another Filipino Pedy Lualhati in third at 68. To underscore the standard against which success is measured a pair of 69s from Edwin Anonuevo and Mike Dy-Liacco still did not return a prize.

The Third Division (19-28) crown went to Mark Carpenter at 69. The next two places were decided by countback and seven players, who each shot 70, had been in contention. In the end the anointed ones were Mansoor Tirmizi and Irfan Hashmi.

Ganet Berta, described by Dirab Golf Club Manager Bouchaib El-Jadiani as Dirab’s female version of Tiger Woods, was unchallenged as the Ladies Division champion shooting six-under 66. Ruby Klawikowski and Jocelyn Genfron were second and third at 83 and 110.

South African Michael Steyn ruled the Junior Division at 73 with French girl Maillet Hestia runner-up at 86.

The longest drive awards went to Anonuevo and Berta, and the closes to pin award to Ali Hernandez. Dr. Arif Hussain was the big winner of the raffle draw for the 51-inch color television set. The prize-giving ceremony followed the sumptuous lunch served at the end of the tournament with bigwigs from sponsoring Alesayi Motors Corporation, distributor of Mitsubishi motor vehicles in the Kingdom, in attendance. They are General Manager Muhammad Abu Dhaka and Fleet Sales Manager Mubarak Al-Obathani.

Dirab Golf Committee chair Tom Matthews and Bouchaib presented the awards to the winners. Bouchaib and the committee organized the event with help from his able lieutenants Shahid Rabbani, Mohammad Nishad and John Feldin, Pro-shop supervisor, assistant supervisor and clerk at DGC in the order.

Andrea Corbett, the committee’s sponsorship coordinator, was also present. The next monthly tourney is set for June 23.
