MAKKAH, 4 June 2006 — Security authorities in Makkah have stepped up vigilance in Al-Salama district over the past few days following a string of arson incidents involving various vehicles in the area recently.
A number of vehicles have been set afire, all of them just before dawn, by unidentified arsonists. Early yesterday morning a flaming Dyna minibus was extinguished by firefighters.
Police say they have been unable to find any clues or motives regarding the perpetrators of these arsons. Director of Makkah Police Brig. Turki Al-Ganawi has asked his men to increase efforts to arrest one or more suspects involved.
Three men carrying a gallon of gasoline were arrested last week, but were later cleared of any wrongdoing.
