AFEEF, 7 August 2006 — A dog and cat-loving butcher here was arrested by police after they received complaints from his neighbors that he was selling dog and cat meat at his butcher shop, the Okaz daily reported yesterday. The man’s neighbors lodged a complaint at a local police station after they grew suspicious of his love for cats and dogs. In the complaint, they said he had numerous stray cats and dogs at his home and they suspected he fed them so he could eventually slaughter and sell them as sheep meat. Some of the neighbors even claimed the meat had a “distinct” taste. However, after police took samples of the meat sold at the man’s shop to a veterinary laboratory, tests confirmed that the meat was indeed from a sheep and fit for human consumption.
Football Player Threatens Club President
HAIL, 7 August 2006 — A distraught footballer, who plays for the Al-Jabaleen Football Club, sent a SMS message to the club’s acting president, Khaled Al-Afnan, threatening that if he was not presented with a nice offer then Al-Afnan would end up facing the same fate as the director of education in Hail, who was recently taken hostage in his car and then shot and wounded. Al-Afnan reported the SMS message to police and said that the player’s contract had not been renewed after he asked for a salary of SR5,000 a month. The club administration had refused to accept the demand until the player had undergone a health check, something that the player refused to do so.
Gun Fired in Tiff Over Cell Phone Chip
TAIF, 7 August 2006 — A simple tiff between two Saudi friends over a cell phone chip escalated into a major fight in which one of the youths fired an automatic machine gun at the other, the Al-Jazirah newspaper reported yesterday. In the early hours of the morning, residents of Taif awoke to sounds of machine gun fire and shouting. A local resident told Al-Jazirah how, wearing his nightclothes, he wandered out on to the street to investigate but quickly went back inside after he felt a bullet whiz past his ears. The fight erupted after a young Saudi man refused to hand a cell phone chip to his friend, who went home and returned with a machine gun and began shooting. Luckily no one was injured and police arrested both youths who are presently under investigation.
Massive Brawl in Amusement Park
RIYADH, 7 August 2006 — A massive brawl erupted in the female section of an amusement park in Riyadh on Friday after the bumper car ride stopped due to a cut in electricity, the Al-Yaum daily reported yesterday. As the cars came to a halt, women began blaming each other for pulling the wire and soon a fight erupted as the women began hitting each other using their shoes and handbags. Helpless park attendants and stewards simply looked on unable to do anything.
