JEDDAH, 10 June 2006 — A Saudi racer has won for the first time a second position in the Kart race held recently in Jeddah. Maher Muminah bagged the highest number of points in the Kart racing, a game that recently arrived to the Kingdom that involved go-karts.
The race with an official status is being held under the supervision of the international car rally star, Abdullah Bakhashab. The contestants included 15 other well-known figures in the field of kart racing, including Majid Al-Ghamdi a star of the Middle Eastern level and international auto-cruiser Fadi Hammada.
In the two-day events held here the contestants had a real litmus test to prove their skill and endurance behind the wheel. Maher, who was sponsored by Al-Faisaliya Group and Sony Company, was noted for his exceptional driving skill in the first day’s race to get a third with 17 points after Muhammad Kridiya and Majed Al-Ghamdi with a difference of split seconds. Maher’s third position was a remarkable achievement as at the start he was only at fifth position. Like Formula 1 racing, the participants used the official championship car model Tony Kart, which won the 2004-05 championship with an Italian Fortex 125 cc single cylinder engine of 29 hp.
On the second day the contestants appeared more confident and faster as they were familiar both with their cars and the race course and consequently each one had to fight hard inch after inch. Maher kept up his first day’s tempo and edged forward with a spectacular show of speed and endurance to reach the second place at the close of the day by adding 19 more points to his previous day’s 17 thus bringing the total to 36 which gave him the top position among the Saudi drivers in terms of points though he was behind six points from Kridiya, the man won the first position.
