ABHA, 11 June 2006 — Five men were killed when two cars collided head on in a town close to Khamis Mushyat in the southern Asir Province on Friday, Al-Watan newspaper reported yesterday.
All passengers in one car, including the Sudanese driver and three boys aged 16, 10 and 8 were killed on the spot, police said.
The young driver of the other car, which was coming from Khamis Mushayt, also died. A Saudi passenger with him sustained very serious injuries and was taken to the emergency ward in Asir Hospital.
The traffic on the road was disrupted for two hours following the accident.
Local residents said they had been demanding measures, including the introduction of one-way system, to reduce frequent accidents in that section of the road.
In another accident on Friday, two brothers died and their father was injured on Riyadh-Taif Highway. The family was traveling to Renya to spend holidays there when their car overturned near Al-Hafirah town.
The driver and his brother, who was sitting in the front seat, died on the spot. Their mother and a child escaped with minor injuries. The injured father was admitted to Afif General Hospital.
