MADINAH, 25 June 2006 — A 30-year-old “Majnoon-Layla wannabe” in Madinah, spurred by his blind passionate love for a woman, broke into his beloved’s family home and demanded her hand in marriage, Al-Watan daily reported. The family was left in utter shock as the modern-day Romeo pranced around the house refusing to leave until he had secured a bride. The exasperated father finally telephoned the police at which point the Majnoon made a sharp exit. Like the mythical Arabian lover Majnoon, the man persevered and continuously telephoned the family asking for the daughter’s hand. The father grew rather weary of the attention his daughter was attracting and so he invited the man to his house to discuss the issue and make marriage arrangements. As soon as the man arrived he was arrested by the police and taken away to languish in jail with a broken heart.
