JEDDAH, 28 July 2006 — A newly wedded couple were on their way to celebrating their honeymoon when the husband stopped at a gas station to fill up his car tank, the daily Al-Madinah reported yesterday.
His new bride had been sleeping in the back seat, but got up to use the bathroom at the station. Failing to notice this, the husband paid for the gas and got back in the car. He sped away as his wife was emerging from the bathroom.
She yelled for him to no avail. Another driver noticed what had happened and followed in pursuit to inform the man of his left-behind bride.
When the absent-minded husband noticed the car following in fast pursuit, he thought the driver who was gesturing wildly from within was some kind of freak, and accelerated to get away.
The Good Samaritan found a police officer and informed him of what had happened. The police officer radioed ahead to the nearest checkpoint, explained the whole situation and gave them a description of the car.
Fifty kilometers later, when the man was finally stopped at the checkpoint, he recognized his error. He sheepishly drove back to the station and began what probably turned out to be a long, contrite speech about how stupid he was and that he would never, ever, ever do such a thing again.
