ISLAMABAD, 7 July 2006 — President Pervez Musharraf laid the foundation of the Council of Common Interest (CCI) yesterday as suggested by the Supreme Court of Pakistan in its verdict on the Pakistan Steel Mills privatization case. The Council of Common Interest is a constitutional necessity in dealing with numerous subjects relating to the share of provinces. Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz has been appointed chairman of CCI with seven ministers as members. The president also addressed the office-bearers of the ruling Pakistan Muslim League. In his speech in reaction to the Alliance for the Restoration of Democracy’s decision to set an impeachment motion against him, the president said, “If the people of Pakistan reelect me then I will serve country’s vital interest and if people reject me then I will go home.”
