NEW DELHI, 20 July 2006 — India has begun evacuating its nationals from war-torn Lebanon and will also try to bring back stranded Sri Lankans and Nepalese citizens, a Foreign Ministry spokesman said yesterday.
About 49 Indians were on their way home yesterday and another 1,000 were awaiting evacuation and would be brought out in the next two days, Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Navtej Sarna told reporters in New Delhi. “We have received information that they have safely arrived in Syria,” he said. Four Indian navy ships “will be berthing in the (Lebanese) harbor as soon as they get place,” Sarna said.
Meanwhile, Bangladesh has sought help from the Geneva-based International Organization for Migration to evacuate more than 10,000 of its nationals from Lebanon.
