KARACHI, 23 July 2006 — A German firm has won the contract for laying railway track from Pakistan to China, Pakistan’s Railway Minister Shaikh Rashid Ahmed said. Rashid told a press conference that firms from Australia, Malaysia and Germany participated in the bidding. The German bidder offered the best rates and won the tender for laying the railway track from Havelian to Sust. The project will be completed at a cost of Rs.72 million.
The railways minister said that the Lahore to Islamabad railway line, a 250 km stretch, would be converted into double track for plying a fast train. Tenders are being launched for the project, which will be funded by the ADB.
