YANBU, 14 August 2006 — Hani Al-Juhani, a 28-year-old Saudi national, has won the hearts and admiration of many Filipinos in Yanbu in his first-ever stage appearance as part of a Filipino band.

His vibrant rendition of Pinoy Ako (I’m a Filipino), popularized by Orange & Lemon, made him an instant celebrity at the gathering organized by the Yanbu Bowlers-Saudi Arabia (YBSA) at the Arac Beach Resort and Restaurant last Thursday.

Pinoy Ako is the theme song of the popular reality TV show Pinoy Big Brother of ABS-CBN Broadcast Network, which is shown also in the Middle East and Europe on the network’s The Filipino Channel (TFC).

Hani was repeatedly applauded, especially when he reached the line “Ipagmalaki mo, Pinoy ako, Pinoy tayo... (Say it loud, I’m a Filipino, We’re Filipinos...)”

He also sang Cueshe’s latest hit, Ulan, further endearing himself to the cheering audience.

“I love Pinoy songs and I thank my Filipino friends for helping me out and coaching me every time to make my rendition to almost near perfect,” said Hani in a brief interview with Arab News.

His colleagues at the 10-member Divert’s Band all have good words for their adopted Pinoy brother.

“He is a very talented guy who knows every bit of the latest variety songs, disco hits and OPMs (original Pilipino music). Madali siyang turuan at mabilis ang pick-up (he’s a fast learner),” said drummer Jason Castillo, who is also an officer of YBSA.

Hani is the lead singer of the newly formed band, whose members are composed of Yanbu-based Filipino workers, namely, Danny Pamintuan, keyboard; Jayson Castillo, drummer; Gilbert Barangan, bass; Cesar Monares, lead guitarist; trio singers Suzette, Ella and Liza; and Philip Relos as manager and rhythm synchronizer.

Like Castillo, the other band members are also bowlers or members of YBSA.

Also adding spice to the celebration were the YBSA dancers and Humps Ladies.

“This celebration is dedicated to the unification of all Filipino workers and their families in Yanbu,” said association president Reynaldo Andres, who led the distribution of gifts to all participants of their bowling tournament at the Yanbu-Holiday Inn and awarding of a trophy to program sponsor Khalid Rifai of Dywidag Company Ltd. YBSA officers were also presented. They are, Murshid Al-Juhani, honorary president; Rey Andres, president; Danny Pamintuan, vice president; Ruben Grino, auditor; Lorna Manalang, treasurer; Lorna Canda, secretary; and Jayson Castillo, tournament director.
