JEDDAH, 4 September 2006 — Computer troubleshooting and assembly remains the hottest productive diversion for Filipinos in the Kingdom, but cell phone repair may yet catch up.

Leaders of the Bag-ong Bicol Saro nin Jeddah (BBSJ), probably the first group in the Kingdom to organize a cell phone repair training workshop, said the activity has become so attractive that even those in cities away from Jeddah also want one to be held in their places of work.

“We have been swamped with requests for more workshops in Jeddah and other places since we first conducted our training early this year,” said Danilo Londonio, BBSJ assistant public relations officer and an official of the group’s training unit.

In its first workshop from March to April, BBSJ graduated 72 students, including some women. In the second series held July to August, 66 participants completed the course.

The BBSJ, in cooperation with the Yanbu Bowlers-Saudi Arabia (YBSA), is now preparing for the 3rd seminar-workshop series on Sept. 8, 15, 22 and 29.

The workshops are to be held at the Pearl of the Orient International School (POIS) from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.

Because of the big number of interested participants, BBSJ requires reservations to be made.

BBSJ’s team of instructors include Bernard Domingo, Alex Cruz and Marlon Arcilla, all of whom are working in various cell phone communication outfits in Jeddah.

“The objective of this training program is to prepare fellow OFWs with additional skills that they may benefit from either when they look for new jobs or as a means to earn extra income,” said Jun Abarrera, PRO of the group.

Abarrera said formal invitations have been made by some community organizations for the BBSJ to conduct workshops in Taif and Alkhobar. He said BBSJ’s training group may go to Taif one a substantial number of participants is reached.

During the graduation ceremonies for the 2nd seminar-workshop, Consul Jose V. Jacob encouraged more OFWs to avail themselves of similar trainings and use what they learn for their own wellbeing.

Among the graduates were Redentor Perez, a 34-year-old native of Calumpit, Bulacan, who showed great determination to learn despite being handicapped with polio. He was repeatedly applauded when he went onstage to receive his certificate of completion.

Another graduate was 35-year-old seamstress Tonette Espedido, who hopes to set up a cell phone repair business when she goes home.

Named Top 10 graduates for showing exceptional troubleshooting talents were Roberto Vinarao, Arnulfo Cuizon, Rogelio dela Cruz, Emil Cunanan, Noel Gaviola, Elodomer Anonuevo, Edwin Lazada, Noel Farrales, Dominador Madinah, and Jerry Sacanle.

Jinno Miguel Alisbo was cited as junior awardee for being the youngest participant. Lino Urbano got the senior awardee citation.
