NEW DELHI, 11 September 2006 — India’s Election Commission yesterday said the revised voters’ list for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections would be published in January and the poll process completed by May 14 next year.
Chief Election Commissioner N. Gopalaswamy is in the state to hear objections and suggestions on the ongoing delimitation process for assembly and parliamentary constituencies in 11 districts of the state. He will be hearing complaints and suggestions of five more districts of the central Uttar Pradesh today. “The dates for the elections are yet to be finalized, but in any case, it will be completed by May 14, before the tenure of the current assembly expires,” Gopalaswamy told reporters. Meanwhile, Congress party Member of Parliament from Amethi, Rahul Gandhi, will visit his constituency today on a four-day tour. Rahul is expected to meet prospective candidates for the assembly elections. He is also scheduled to preside over a meeting in the district headquarters of Sultanpur to review the work done by the district development committee, his constituency representative K.L. Sharma said.
“This will be for the first time that the Amethi MP will be chairing the meeting,” he said. He said it is also likely that Rahul would be meeting prospective candidates from the constituency for the coming polls.
Besides, he would be holding meetings with party office bearers, gram pradhans, block and panchayat-level workers during his stay, Sharma said.
