Ittihad, Shabab Play CL Quarterfinal 1st Legs
JEDDAH, 13 September 2006 — Two-time defending champions Al-Ittihad launch their campaign to win an AFC Champions League treble when they face Al-Karama of Syria today in the first leg of their quarterfinal home and away series. As Ittihad host the Syrians at the Prince Abdullah Al-Faisal Stadium another Saudi squad, Al-Shabab, are away to Ulan Horang-I in South Korea in their own two-legged quarterfinal showdown.
Ittifaq Down Nasr
DAMMAM – Al-Nasr lost their first match against Al-Ittifaq 2-1 in the Saudi soccer league last night at Prince Muhammad ibn Fahd Stadium here. Saleh Basher put Ittifaq on the scoresheet with a 29th minute strike from a fatal mistake by Nasr goalie Muhammad Al-Khojali. Khaled Al-Salem then gave the hosts a 2-0 lead with a goal in the 39th minute before Nasr pulled one back in the 73rd minute when Abdul Rahman Al-Bishi scored on the rebound of a penalty kick that was blocked by the Ittifaq goalie.
Saudi Cagers Gear Up for 10th GCC Event
JEDDAH — To prepare for the 10th GCC Basketball Championship the Saudi national team entered training camp in Egypt. During their stay there the Saudis played tuneup games with the Egyptian team. The championship will take place in Doha, Qatar where Ahmed Al-Dahash, council member of the Saudi Arabian Basketball Federation, is to join the 13-man team tomorrow. Ali Al-Maghrabi, Jabir Al-Shamrani, Yehya Ibrahim, Jabir Kaabi, Yassar Mukhtar, Khalid Fallatah, Fawwaz Qassas, Mohammed Al-Huwaifi, Walid Al-Madani, Haitham Al-Hawasawi, Hashim Al-Fawatawi, Raid Al-Durais and Mohammed Al-Saqqar comprise the team.
Double Reward for Special Football Team
JEDDAH — General Presidency of Youth Welfare President Prince Sultan ibn Fahd ordered the Football Federation for People with Special Needs chief Nassir Al-Salih to double the reward of the football team that qualified for the quarterfinals of the 4th World Special Football Championship. The gesture was to further encourage the team.
Football & Handball Teams Reach Finals
JEDDAH — The Saudi football and handball teams reached the finals of the 16th Arabian Schools sports meet in Algeria. The footballers beat the hosts 2-1 in the semifinals to set up a championship clash with Iraq who beat Yemen 4-0 in the other semis contest. The handball team advanced by beating Algeria 31-27 to face Syria in the final. — Razan Baker
