KARACHI, 18 September 2006 — Nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan was discharged from the Aga Khan Hospital after undergoing cancer surgery, but he is being kept in the city for few weeks rest.
Qadeer was discharged from the hospital yesterday at 8.15 a.m., and was taken out of the hospital through a backdoor instead of the main gate, due to security reasons.
“He is doing fine despite some minor issues and is under intensive post-care treatment,” said a doctor.
“He is recovering quickly and is in high spirits,” his wife Henny Khan told reporters earlier in the week.
Qadeer was taken to his sister, Razia Begum’s, home in an upscale residential neighborhood in Karachi where dozens of paramilitary troops and intelligence agents were deployed, a security official said.
No visitors aside from his family will be allowed to meet Qadeer, sources said. The Inter-Services Public Relations Directorate said late Saturday that Qadeer would stay in Karachi for “a few weeks for postoperative care under the supervision of the team of doctors who operated upon him.”
Qadeer was transferred to the hospital last week for the operation and only relatives have been allowed to visit him as the government has kept his movements a closely guarded secret.
