HYDERABAD, 25 October 2006 — Gangavaram and Krishnapatnam deep-water ports on Andhra Pradesh coast would become operational during 2008, Chief Minister Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy said here yesterday. The chief minister reviewed the progress of all intermediate and minor ports with the minister and officials concerned. He said that the private investments in the AP ports would amount to Rs.61.5 billion. He pointed out that Gangavaram port near Visakhapatnam’s major port was privatized in August 2003 for development of a deep-water port on a build-operate-transfer basis initially for 30 years. The Rs.18-billion Gangavaram Greenfield port would be built as a multipurpose port to handle ships up to 230,000 DWT. It would be the deepest port in India.
