LONDON, 30 September 2006 — The dollar was stable against the euro here yesterday on data from the United States suggesting that the US economy was enjoying a soft landing.

The single European currency in late-day trade was at 1.2695 dollars after 1.2699 late Thursday in New York. The dollar was meanwhile trading at 117.95 yen.

The euro was changing hands at 1.2695 dollars against 1.2699 dollars on Thursday, 149.75 yen (149.60), 0.6784 pounds (0.6765) and 1.5871 Swiss francs (1.5843).

Meanwhile, the FTSE 100 index closed down 10.5 points or 0.18 percent, at 5,960.8.

The DAX index ended at 6,004.33 points, up 15.17 or 0.25 percent and a rise of 121.01 from seven days ago. The CAC-40 index closed at 5,250.01 points, unchanged from Thursday.

In New York, the Dow, which ended the prior session just short of its record finish, was down 2.56 points (0.02 percent) at 11,715.89 at 1500 GMT, after trading as high as 11,741.99. The tech-heavy NASDAQ composite rose 2.01 points (0.12 percent) to 2,269.73 and the Standard and Poor’s 500 index lost a slender 1.05 points (0.08 percent) to 1,338.10.
