NEW DELHI, 30 October 2006 — Police yesterday appealed to Delhi residents to maintain law and order and avoid damaging public property during a three-day business shutdown beginning today. Shops across New Delhi will remain shut to protest a court order to close businesses operating illegally in residential areas. Calling on citizens to assist police in maintaining law and order, City Police Commissioner K.K. Paul said: “Public property is your own property. We appeal to you not to damage public property, especially various modes of transport. Please ensure that no inconvenience is created to fellow Delhiites.”
During a one-day strike called by Delhi traders on Sept. 20, there was large-scale violence resulting in the death of five people and injuries to scores. All schools in the capital have been ordered closed on federal government instructions, Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said yesterday. “We do not want to take any chance,” she added.
